Junior FIRST LEGO League
Inspiring the youngest innovators — ages 6 to 9
Junior FIRST LEGO League (Jr.FLL) introduces children to the excitement of STEM through guided, hands-on challenges using LEGO elements. Teams explore a real-world theme, build a model, and create a Show Me poster to share what they've learned.
What Is Jr.FLL?
Jr.FLL is designed for children ages 6 to 9 and captures the natural curiosity of young learners. Guided by adult coaches, teams of up to six members work together to investigate a scientific challenge, build a motorized LEGO model, and present their findings at a local Expo. The program emphasizes teamwork, respect, and the Core Values that are central to all FIRST programs.
Each season brings a new theme tied to a real-world topic. Teams research the theme, design a model with at least one moving part, and document their journey on a Show Me poster. The season culminates in a non-competitive Expo where teams celebrate their accomplishments with family, friends, and the wider community.
Junior FIRST LEGO League offers a gentle introduction to the world of STEM for children ages six to nine. Through guided, hands-on challenges using LEGO elements, young learners explore a real-world theme each season. Working in small teams with adult coaches, children build a motorized LEGO model that demonstrates their understanding of the challenge topic. They also create a Show Me poster to illustrate their research and discoveries. This process encourages teamwork, creative problem-solving, and early exposure to engineering concepts in a fun, low-pressure environment. The program captures natural curiosity and channels it into meaningful learning, laying a strong foundation for future participation in FIRST's more advanced robotics programs.
Participation in Jr.FLL helps children develop essential skills at a formative age. Team members learn to collaborate, share ideas, and communicate their findings through their model and poster presentation. The program emphasizes the engineering design process, encouraging kids to iterate on their designs and think critically about how things work. Coaches guide the experience, ensuring that every child has a chance to contribute and feel successful. For many families, Jr.FLL serves as a wonderful entry point into the broader Maryland FIRST community, connecting them with other like-minded families and volunteers who share a passion for STEM education and youth development.
Maryland FIRST supports Jr.FLL teams across the state with resources, training, and events that celebrate young innovators. Volunteers and mentors play a vital role in making these experiences possible, from coaching teams to helping at local expos and showcases. The program aligns with the organization's broader mission of making STEM accessible and engaging for all ages. Families interested in starting a Jr.FLL team can find information about season timelines, registration, and team resources through Maryland FIRST. The program's emphasis on discovery and exploration helps young children build confidence and a positive attitude toward science and technology that can last a lifetime.
Expos & Team Resources
Jr.FLL teams showcase their work at local Expos held across Maryland. These events are celebrations of discovery — not competitions — where every team is recognized for its effort and creativity. Teams receive guidance, activity materials, and season-specific resources to support their project from kickoff through the Expo.
Coaches and mentors can access planning guides, meeting outlines, and the official Jr.FLL challenge materials to help their team succeed.
Starting a Jr.FLL Team
Starting a team is straightforward. A Jr.FLL team needs at least two adult coaches and up to six children. Teams can form through schools, community groups, scout troops, or simply a group of families. No technical experience is required — curiosity and enthusiasm are the only prerequisites.
Maryland FIRST provides registration guidance, season materials, and connections to local Expos so your team can jump right in.
Volunteer with Jr.FLL
Expos and team support rely on volunteers. Whether you can help review teams at an Expo, assist with event logistics, or mentor a new group of coaches, your time makes a difference for Maryland's youngest STEM learners.
